Hey photographers!! I’m sharing with you some answers to my most frequently asked questions. If you don’t find the answer you were looking for, I’d be happy to set up a one-on-one Q&A session with you!
What cameras are good for beginners?
For beginners, I would recommend a Sony A6000 or A7iii, Nikon D3500, Canon Rebel t8i or 80d.
What lenses are good for beginners?
There’s so many good lenses out there! Here are a few of my favorites for beginners:
A 50mm f/1.8
A 24-70mm f/2.8
A 30 or 35mm (with an aperture capability of f/1.8 or f/2.0)
What’s the best way to grow my portfolio?
Shoot, shoot, and keep on shooting! Here’s a few ways I grew my portfolio when I first started out:
- Doing free shoots for family and friends
- Posting a model call and setting up a shoot
- Bring your camera everywhere you go!
- Shadow another photographer
What should I use to edit?
Lightroom Classic is what I use! It’s only available on Desktop, and it’s about $150 for the year. You can also use Lightroom CC on your phone for free.
How do you keep your clients organized?
I use a client management system called Honeybook! I love it because I can send contracts & invoices, get paid, schedule sessions, and automate my whole process so easily.

How much should I charge?
In my opinion, you should start off cheap and as you get better & more experience – start to raise your prices.
For example: do your first couples shoot for free, then $25 , then $50, then $100, then $125, etc.
How do I shoot in manual settings?
I have a manual camera settings guide, go check it out here!
How to I get a blurry background in my photos?
Two ways: one is to shoot with a low aperture (anywhere from f/2.8-f/1.4).
Then, you can get a longer focal length lens to give you a blurry background too (try a 50mm or an 85mm).
What gear do you use?
Check out my What’s in My Camera Bag blog post here!
Can you critique my photos?
I do photo critiques every Friday on my Instagram, so follow along on there to see how you can submit your photo!
What do you use to deliver photos to your clients?
I use Pic-Time for photo delivery!!
Should I shoot in RAW?
Yes!! RAW files are much higher quality, so you’ll get a more precise edit in Lightroom. If you do choose to shoot in raw, you’ll need the capability to handle larger file sizes (so a fast memory card and a larger hard drive).
How can I pick your brain with my questions photography?
